While much of Martin Simmons Sweers’ work is about creating new designs and helping clients to imagine a space in different ways, this project was about improving visitor experience while ensuring the new space fits seamlessly into the original architecture.
The 8,000 sq. ft. interior renovation project heavily focused on bringing all community interactions into one centralized Customer Service space, and individual meeting rooms. With services currently spread throughout the building, the new design creates a space that is overall more convenient and accessible for citizens looking to gain in-person customer service. Additional waiting areas and breakout meeting rooms were added to allow for private discussions with City staff members.
The staff working space is an accommodating open concept environment with adjacent smaller breakout zones. The materiality and overall design aesthetic of the new space are complementary to the original architectural details seen throughout City Hall. Finishes such as natural oak, granite, and tile are repurposed and reused to develop this cohesion.
