The new 75,000 sq. ft. YMCA in Barrie replaces an aging facility, providing a lap and leisure pool, fitness centre, public café, child care, a youth and seniors centre, and transitional housing with outreach support. The design consists of two masses: a two-storey block housing YMCA programs and a single-storey south-facing wing for childcare. A slender canopy bridges these elements, creating a landscaped courtyard. The first level features light masonry and clear curtain wall, while the second level is wrapped in a perforated metal screen, providing solar control and a light, airy aesthetic. Curved geometry optimizes space within site constraints and creates inviting interiors. Set back from Bayview, the building maintains a strong visual identity through sinuous massing, blending rectilinear gym and pool areas with curved curtain walls and perforated screens. A gold-accented running track, exposed by removing the screen, serves as a focal point, ensuring visibility from the main road.
