Andraz grew up in Slovenia amongst very artistic family members who were always creating. Although he admired the carpentry work of his father and brothers, Andraz preferred helping his uncle, a restorer of sculptures and his cousin, a restorer of paintings and frescoes.
“When I helped restore a sculpture or painting, I felt like I was touching history and making it better. With architecture I feel the same way - I feel like this is how I can contribute to my family’s artistic heritage.”
Although Andraz pursued a variety of hobbies, including opera singing and artistic photography, Andraz found his true passion for design at the University of Ljubljana. He found particular inspiration as a co-op student when he worked at a firm dealing with building conservation and adaptation of castles and historical houses. After graduating from the University’s five-year architecture program, Andraz went on to work at one of the country’s top firms and worked on designs for some of Slovenia’s most important public buildings. In 2012, Andraz moved to Southwestern Ontario. After researching top firms, he joined Martin Simmons Sweers and today serves as a Senior Designer.
“I appreciate Andraz’s positive air and personality on a project team. I could tell he brought a really interesting design acumen to the team and elevated our project accordingly. His leadership was dependable and steady.”
“My favourite project I’ve worked on and one I pass every day on the ION on my way to work is the Google Office. It’s become an iconic building that everyone recognizes. I think it is the birthplace of modern design in downtown Kitchener."
